IBM Cloud Private - Helm not happy again

This follows on from yesterday's thread: -

Today, after booting up my ICP VMs ( Master/Boot, Worker and Proxy ), I see this in the GUI: -

and: -

and: -

and: -

all of which makes me think that Helm API isn't happy again.

Digging into the Helm API Pod: -

So I dived onto the command-line: -

docker ps -a|grep -i helm-api

f9ee8a0e5d20        b72c1d4155b8                      "npm start"              2 minutes ago       Exited (0) About a minute ago                       k8s_helmapi_helm-api-5874f9d746-9qcjg_kube-system_7122aa29-1bcb-11e8-ab0b-000c290f4d7f_60
de1a7b2d1bf2        ibmcom/pause:3.0                  "/pause"                 2 hours ago         Up 2 hours                                          k8s_POD_helm-api-5874f9d746-9qcjg_kube-system_7122aa29-1bcb-11e8-ab0b-000c290f4d7f_8

which makes me think that the first container is having a bad day.

I bounced it: -

docker restart f9ee8a0e5d20

and watched the logs: -

docker logs f9ee8a0e5d20 -f

> helmApi@0.0.0 start /usr/src/app
> node ./bin/www

so no obvious exception …..

And yet …..

I dug further, looking specifically at the Kubernetes pods in the kube-system namespace ( rather than the default namespace where my "user" workloads reside )

kubectl get pods --namespace kube-system

This pod was deployed using a Helm chart: -

helm list

NAME           REVISION UPDATED                  STATUS   CHART                   NAMESPACE
davesdatapower 1        Thu Mar  1 14:54:21 2018 DEPLOYED ibm-datapower-dev-1.0.4 default
virtuous-joey  1        Thu Mar  1 18:03:30 2018 DEPLOYED ibm-open-liberty-1.0.0  default

so I removed the release: -

helm delete --purge davesdatapower

release "davesdatapower" deleted

helm list

NAME          REVISION UPDATED                  STATUS   CHART                  NAMESPACE
virtuous-joey 1        Thu Mar  1 18:03:30 2018 DEPLOYED ibm-open-liberty-1.0.0 default

and now all looks good: -

kubectl get pods --namespace default

virtuous-joey-ibm-open-l-6db4566d6d-zbgf9   1/1       Running   1          17h

I've since redeployed my DataPower pod: -

helm install --name davesdatapower -f dp.yaml ibm-charts/ibm-datapower-dev

NAME:   davesdatapower
LAST DEPLOYED: Fri Mar  2 12:07:41 2018
NAMESPACE: default
STATUS: DEPLOYED

NOTES:

1. Get the application URL by running these commands:
      export NODE_PORT=$(kubectl get --namespace default -o jsonpath="{.spec.ports[0].nodePort}" services davesdatapower-ibm-datapower-dev)
export NODE_IP=$(kubectl get nodes --namespace default -o jsonpath="{.items[0].status.addresses[0].address}")
      echo https://$NODE_IP:$NODE_PORT

and, as suggested, grabbed the endpoint URL: -

export NODE_PORT=$(kubectl get --namespace default -o jsonpath="{.spec.ports[0].nodePort}" services davesdatapower-ibm-datapower-dev)

export NODE_IP=$(kubectl get nodes --namespace default -o jsonpath="{.items[0].status.addresses[0].address}")

and checked that the pod containing the DataPower instance was up and running: -

kubectl get pods

NAME                                                READY     STATUS    RESTARTS   AGE
davesdatapower-ibm-datapower-dev-57f6cf4c95-9dqwp   1/1       Running   0          2m
virtuous-joey-ibm-open-l-6db4566d6d-zbgf9           1/1       Running   1          18h

and, finally, hit the DP endpoint: -

For the record, DP is acting as a Web Application Proxy (WAP) against IBM.COM :-)

I'm following this recipe: -

on IBM developerWorks.

Hello Dave, same problem and same "by patience" resolution.

It seems that helm-api receive many timeout error like this:

2018-04-08T09:56:52.779Z 'ERROR' 'downloadAndStore Problem getting response from URL https://kubernetes-charts.storage.googleapis.com/kubernetes-dashboard-0.4.0.tgz {"message":"read ETIMEDOUT","stack":"Error: read ETIMEDOUT\\n at exports._errnoException (util.js:1020:11)\\n at TLSWrap.onread (net.js:568:26)","code":"ETIMEDOUT","errno":"ETIMEDOUT","syscall":"read"}'

I put some other non IBM repository si i think there is some "latency" when a repository refresh occur.

Claudio, thanks for the comments and the feedback. Cheers, Dave

Visual Studio Code - Wow 🙀

Why did I not know that I can merely hit [cmd] [p]  to bring up a search box allowing me to search my project e.g. a repo cloned from GitHub...
