'tis now sorted, thanks to a fellow blogger's post here.
In essence, there's a missing VMware configuration file that needs to get popped into the user's home VMware directory ( ~/.vmware ).

Why did I not know that I can merely hit [cmd] [p] to bring up a search box allowing me to search my project e.g. a repo cloned from GitHub...
