there are a myriad of ways to integrate Connections into Portal, including: -
- Catalog-based portlets

- Web Application Integrator ( inject Portal navigation into Connections pages via JavaScript )

This isn't YET supported for Portal 7, but I do have an internal version that works, and we expect a Catalog-hosted version soon
- Web Application Bridge portlet - new this month

- iFrame portlet
- Web Clipping portlet
- Custom web application integration, including CreativeCommons HTTP Client etc.

- Custom portlets, including those built with WebSphere Portlet Factory which has a REST Services builder; Connections is a bunch of RESTful services.
The Catalog also includes a set of source models/builders, as used by the IBM-supplied portlets: -

- ATOM/RSS feeds, consuming Connections events as feeds using, perhaps, the Catalog-based Syndicated Feed Reader portlet

- Person/Business Card - this is standard in WebSphere Portal, but needs some hand-feeding

Did I miss any ? How about deploying Connections iWidgets in Portal 7 ?
*UPDATE* My Aussie pal, Adam Brown, also mentioned some sterling work that he and his ISW team have been doing here: -
Integrating Lotus Connections with WebSphere Portal - Part 1
Integrating Lotus Connections with WebSphere Portal - Part 2
Integrating Lotus Connections with WebSphere Portal - Part 3

Dave here is a method we have used to integrate Connections into Portal (works with Web Page Portlet or Web App Integrator, and probably Web App Bridge as well).
We have done at a number of clients and it works very well. We will be updating soon for Connections 3
Opps. And the link ;)
